In the morning, you depart for the city of Granada, situated on the plateau of the Andalusian province. This historic city has a rich history, having been ruled by the Visigoths and Arabs. It served as the last stronghold of the Arab dynasty during their eight-hundred-year-long rule of the Iberian Peninsula. In the 15th century, King Ferdinand successfully expelled the Arabs, ultimately uniting Spain. You'll have a picturesque moment in front of the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace famously known as the Red Palace. The tour continues to explore the old city of Granada, characterized by its exquisite and delicate architecture. If possible, your tour guide may offer an optional excursion to Mijas and/or Ronda.

In the morning, embark on a self-paid group activity and head to Ronda, the birthplace of Spanish bullfighters. Ronda proudly holds the distinction of being home to Spain's oldest bullring, where the love, hatred, and passion of the fighters of that era unfolded. Despite its seemingly serene facade, Ronda emanates a vibrant Spanish charm that is unmatched. The town's romantic and peaceful white houses perched on dramatic cliffs serve as a testament to its allure.
After the group activity in Ronda or Mijas, the tour heads northbound to Seville, the largest city in the autonomous region of Andalusia. Once the capital of the Muslim dynasty, Seville is considered the guardian angel of culture in Andalusia and the birthplace of flamenco dance. Seville, the primary setting of many operas, including Bizet’s Carmen, hosted the Universal Exposition of Seville in 1992. Upon arrival, visit the Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church globally, completed in the early 16th century.
The cathedral halls now serve as the Royal Chapel, the burial place of kings for over a century. The tomb of Christopher Columbus, credited for discovering the New World, is also located in the church. Next, explore the Alcázar of Seville, which was originally a Muslim palace and later converted into a Spanish Royal Palace. The upper levels of the Alcázar still serve as the official Seville residence for the royal family, making it the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. Registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, along with the Seville Cathedral, the Alcázar is a significant historical site. The tour continues with a walk to Santa Cruz, Torre del Oro (the Tower of Gold), and Maria Luisa Park, the location of the 1992 World Expo. In Plaza de España (Spain Square), admire crafted porcelain paintings depicting the history and elegance of historical Spain.

Later, return to Lisbon city center to explore the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Belem Tower played a crucial role during the Age of Discovery, serving as the departure point for ships. The Jerónimos Monastery stands as one of the most prominent examples of Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline architecture in Lisbon. You can't say you have been to Greece on holiday without seeing the natural wonder of Santorini. As our MSC cruise ship manuvres into the great caldera of Santorini (Thira), the land seems to rise up and clamp around it. Gaunt, sheer cliffs loom hundreds of metres above the deep blue sea, nothing grows or grazes to soften the awesome view. The only colours are the reddish-brown, black and grey pumice layers on the cliff face of this largest island in the mini-archipelago. A shore excursion on your MSC Mediterranean cruise can be the perfect chance to experience Fira which clings precariously to the edge of the enormous caldera. The Archaeological Museum of Thira, near the cable car to the north of town, is well-presented and has a collection from the excavations of Ancient Thira.
When embarking on an MSC cruise to the Mediterranean Sea, Mykonos encapsulates the quintessential image of the Cyclades. During the summer, most people flock to the beaches during the day, making early morning or late afternoon the ideal times to meander through the maze of narrow streets. The labyrinthine design, originally intended to confuse pirates who plagued Mykonos in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, continues to captivate today's visitors. Upon disembarking from your MSC cruise, embracing the experience of getting lost in the convoluted streets and alleys becomes half the fun of exploring this enchanting place.
Delight in the world-class show performances aboard the cruise and partake in a myriad of onboard activities, including cafes, pools, bars, restaurants, and more.
The Italian port city of Bari, a destination on MSC Mediterranean Cruises, is situated on the coast of the archaeologically-rich Apulia region. This ancient town seamlessly blends the old and the new, featuring historical churches, castles, and piazzas juxtaposed with modern galleries, shops, and museums. Venturing further afield, you'll encounter a plethora of natural wonders, including UNESCO World Heritage site caves.
Bari, with its breathtaking beaches and world-class restaurants, stands out as a memorable seaside destination. MSC Cruises excursions offer a variety of exciting attractions, including the 'Sassi' in Matera, Alberobello, and the Caves of Castellana and Polignano a Mare. Notably, Matera's 'Sassi' district, a network of caves carved into the mountain, holds UNESCO World Heritage status, with some caves dating back to Neolithic times. Matera's evocative biblical atmosphere has attracted film directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini (The Gospel According to Matthew, 1964) and Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ, 2004). For those seeking epic adventures, a journey to the caves of Castellana, situated in Italy's wine and olive region, is a must.
As your unforgettable holiday in Europe comes to an end, enjoy a final breakfast before disembarking from the cruise. You will then be transferred to VCE Airport for your departure back to Sydney/Melbourne. Anticipate arriving in Australia on Day 18.
